Matt Charlton

Matt Charlton

Matthew (34) is no stranger to Canada, his first visit to DCRA (where he will join the team) having come in 1992 when he worked in Montreal for part of his year abroad as a languages student. He returned in 1994 with the successful Oxford & Cambridge team and had his first taste of coaching Scotland at Connaught the following year.

He won the Higgins Merchants Cup on that trip but had to wait 8 years for his next overseas individual trophy, on a Great Britain tour to New Zealand, where he also came 2nd overall in the Northland Championships.

However, he tends to derive far more pleasure from the dynamics of team shooting, which attracted him to the sport at school at RGS Guildford. That preference is driven partly by Matt's good fortune in shooting with and coaching a lot of great shots with Old Guildfordians, OCRA and Scotland.

He is also lucky enough to captain a group of outstanding people with the County of London, which won the English County Championship, the Inter-Counties Long Range and the Purples Match last year.

In real life, Matthew is an institutional stockbroker with HSBC and enjoys snowboarding, skiing, cycling and watching rugby (which he does far better than he ever played it).

Favourite day's shooting: Scotland's narrow win over the Australians in Sydney, 2000

Worst day's shooting: any day that I've let a team down; but even those days are better than days in the office!
